Winter Shore League 2010

Match 4. Colwyn Prom. 27/2/10

Another good turnout considering the conditions, a cold North Easterly and the chance of rain and sleet according to the forecast!

18 of us started the match at various points along the prom, but it soon became clear that rockling were the only fish around, so the ones with a rock groyne or a patch of rough ground nearby had the advantage.

After 4 hours only 7 had fish to weigh, with Dave Elmer and Norman Dorling tying for first place on 0.36 kgs., Dave with 6 and Norman with 4 rockling, Mark Patterson took 3rd place with 5 rockling and a sea scorpion ( the only fish other than rockling to be weighed in ) for a weight of 0.32. 4th was John Jones with 0.28, and 5th Mark Hill with 0.24, Bill McLintock and Allan Illman were the other 2 weighers with a rockling each, and the heaviest one of the night earned a tenner for Mark Hill, a specimen of 0.17, or 0-05-12 in old money.

No ladies or juniors took part, and top team were Dave and Mark with 71 points.

Match 3. Flint Cob. 21/2/10.

A good turnout of 20 members this time, after the overnight snow it turned out to be a bright sunny day, and expectations were high for a few flounders. It turned out that “few” was the key word. After 4 hours of effort only 7 anglers weighed in, a total of 9 flounders, with only two of those having 2 fish each, and the others 1 each

Norman Dorling found 2 for 1.13 kgs,. and first place, with his best fish of 0.65 kgs. ( 1-06-08 lbs. ) taking the heaviest fish prize. Mike Peters was 2nd with 2 for 0.83, and Bill McLintock 3rd with 1 for 0.39. Glyn Williamson took 4th place and the last of the cash with 0.35, and the other 3 weighers were John Jones with 0.33, Mike Jones with 0.31, and Dave Lunt with 0.20.

This takes Dave Lunt clear at the top of the league, as the only one to have weighed in at all 3 matches so far.

Top team on the day were Norman and Bill, with Sue Price taking the ladies` prize, and Stephen Higginson the juniors.

Match 2. North Shore.  30/1/10.

The second match of the winter league took place at Llandudno North Shore. 16 anglers took part on a cold evening with some pretty horrible showers of hail and snow.

Everyone had a few fish, whiting and codling mostly, but with very few in-size, there was even a little bass caught by Mike Peters, not many of those around in January!

At the weigh-in only six people had fish in size, with Allan Illman taking first place with a bag of 3 dabs and a whiting for 0.84 kgs. One of his dabs also took the heaviest fish prize at 0.30 kgs. ( 0-10-08 lbs.)

2nd was Mark Patterson with a whiting and a dab for 0.43, and 3rd, his team mate Dave Elmer with 3 rockling for 0.25, the last of the cash went to Dave Lunt in 4th with a whiting of 0.18.

The other two weighers were Peter Price with a specimen rockling of 0.16, and new member Dave Jones, on his debut match, with a rockling of 0.09.

Match 1. Tan Lan. 16/1/10

17 members, old and new, turned up for the first match of the new year. For once the weather was kind to us, after the last couple of weeks of snow and ice it was almost tropical, with no wind and a nice calm sea.

We started a couple of hours before low water, fishing 2 down and 2 up. Those who opted for casting out for whiting found it hard going, with in-size fish few and far between, while the ones fishing at close range near the stone groynes were finding rockling from the start.

Fifteen weighed in eventually, with last year`s winter league winner Kev Jones weighing 18 rockling and a sea scorpion for 1.62 kgs and 1st place.

2nd was his dad Terry Jones, with 12 rockling and a whiting for 1.14. Bill Mclintock took 3rd with 6 rockling and 3 whiting for 1.09, and 4th prize went to Gary Bates with 9 rockling for 0.90. Paul Jones was 5th with 0.84, and Mike Peters 6th with 0.80.

The junior prize went to 9 year old Thomas Davies, fishing his first match, he caught a flounder and a dab for 0.39 kgs., the flounder also taking the heaviest fish prize at 0.26
kgs.

No ladies took part, and top team were Kev and Terry with 73 points.

Summer Shore League 2009

Closed Fur and Feather 2009

A poor weather forecast may have been one of the reasons for the worst turnout in the history of this fixture, with just 14 members making the effort. This meant that the raffle had over 30 prizes in it, and some did very well out of it.

As for the fishing, well, the weather started bad and got worse, there was floating weed in the surf, festooning the lines, and the in-size whiting were very hard to find amongst the little ones.

Club champion John Jones took the top prize with 4 whiting and a rockling for 0.92 kgs, just pipping Bill McLintock by 20 grammes, Bill`s 3 whiting and a dab weighing in at 0.90. 3rd was Mike Jones with 4 whiting for 0.86, and 4th Dave Lunt with 3 whiting and a dab for 0.84.

The pools went to Bill Mclintock with a whiting of 0.33 and Dave Lunt with a dab of 0.18. 12 weighed in, but there was a prize for everyone as usual.

Match 11 - Penmaenmawr - 21st November 2009

11 members turned out for the last match of this summer`s fixtures.

The heavy rain gave way to a clear period for the start of the match, but the wind soon got up with some strong gusts sending rods and buckets in several different directions!

The fishing was as expected, with dogfish and whiting making up all the bags, only Norman found any other species, a bass and a flounder to add to his bag.

After about 3 hours the thunderstorm that had been brewing over Anglesey hit us with a vengeance, a squall took us off our feet with horizontal hailstones and rain making it virtually unfishable. A few of us packed in and took shelter, but the diehards who stuck it out for the last hour had a few extra fish to show for it.

Mike Jones took the honours with a bag of 11 dogfish and 2 whiting for 11.34 kgs.
Norman Dorling`s bag of 8 dogs, 5 whiting, a bass and a flounder took 2nd spot with 10.89 kgs. the bass of 1.27 kgs also taking the heaviest fish prize.

3rd place went to John Jones with 10 dogs and 3 whiting for 10.54, this gave him enough points to win the league by 4 points. Gary Bates was 4th with 10 dogs and 4 whiting for 10.33, and Dave Mitchell 5th with 9.32, 6th place went to Bill McLintock with 8.32.
Top team were Dave Mitchell and Gary Bates with 67 points, making them team champions this year. No ladies or juniors fished.

Match 10 - Prestatyn - 7th November 2009

Just 12 of us for this one, on a wet and breezy night with the wind offshore at the start, and a bonfire and firework display behind us at the sailing club. Things started slowly on the last of the ebb, but as the tide turned the bites picked up and all 12 weighed in at the end.

Whiting, dabs, flounders, and rockling were the species caught, and with Mitch missing this one John Jones took over the top spot in the league with a convincing victory, 12 whiting and 2 dabs for 2.91 kgs, to win by almost a kilo.

Kev Jones was 2nd with 7 whiting and 2 dabs for 1.97, and Mike Peters 3rd with 7 whiting, a dab, and a flounder for 1.89.The last of the cash went to Mike Jones, in 4th place with 5 whiting and a flounder for 1.44, Bill McLintock was close behind with 1.42, and Gary Bates 6th with 1.33, which included the heaviest fish, a flounder of 0.61 kgs.

Stephen Higginson took the junior prize with 4 whiting for 0.67, and top team were Mike Peters and Dave Lunt with 66 points.

Match 9 - Tan Lan - 10th October 2009

18 members and 2 guests fished this low water match, with perfect doggie conditions expectations were pretty high. We were fishing our dogfish rule, which means keeping your best 2 fish to weigh in, and releasing the rest to count as one kilo each, it turned out to be a good idea because the fish count from the 19 who weighed in was 246 dogs, 74 whiting and a pout!

Top bag of 21 dogs and 10 whiting went to Mike Jones with a credited weight of 23.11 kgs 2nd was Bill McLintock with 21 dogs, 4 whiting and a pouting for 21.83. League leader Dave Mitchell took 3rd with 21 dogs and 3 whiting for 21.64, and Terry Jones 4th with 19 dogs and 4 whiting for 20.66, taking the last cash prize plus the heaviest fish prize for a dog of 1.32 kgs ( 2-14-08 lbs )

Glyn Williamson took 5th place with 19 dogs and 7 whiting for 20.53 kgs, and Alan Illman 6th with 18 dogs and 8 whiting for 19.48. Stephen Higginson had 5.60 kgs for the junior prize and Sue Price took the ladies prize with 0.82 kgs.

Top team were Dave Mitchell and Gary Bates with 67 points.

Trevor Davies Cup Match - HHBW - 13th September 2009

Eleven of us made the trip to Holyhead Breakwater for the Trevor Davies Cup match, with the prize going to the heaviest single fish. Obviously not a popular format for our matches!

Half of the competitors stopped at various points along the length of the breakwater while the rest went straight to the end.

Fishing was poor all the way along the structure, with plenty of small fish but nothing worth weighing.

At the weigh in, only four of the anglers had brought fish to be weighed.

Terry Jones won the Cup with his Pollack of 0.83kgs.

100_0190-1.jpg picture by headwyn

Dave Lunt was second with a Ballan Wrasse of 0.53kgs, Norman Dorling took third spot with a Corkwing Wrasse, and Janet was last of the weighers, also with a Corkwing.

Reports were disappointing from the pleasure anglers fishing too.

Match 8 - Pwllheli - 8th August 2009

13 members for this one with a decent bit of weather for once. A slight onshore breeze, and sunshine. Recent reports said there were plenty of black bream around, but they were not coming out to play today.

Only 5 managed to find in-size fish to weigh in, with John Jones taking the lion`s share, 2 dogs, a bream and a flounder for 1.51 kgs. Dave Mitchell was 2nd with a dog and a bream for 0.85, Gary McLeod 3rd with 2 bream and a weever for 0.81, Norman Dorling 4th with a flounder of 0.21, and Mike Jones 5th with a corkwing of 0.12. Top team were Gary and Mike  with 67 points.

Match 7 - Porth Iago - 11th July 2009

Just 10 made the journey down the Lleyn for this one, with the forecast for heavy and continuous rain it wasn`t a prospect to relish. It turned out to be worse than expected, if anything, with rain varying from heavy to torrential for the duration of the match!!

7 of us managed to bring fish to the scales, with a bag limit of 3 of each species.

John Jones took the top place by a wide margin, with 3 wrasse, 3 dogs, and a pouting for 5.00 kgs. This included a ballan wrasse of 1.34 kgs (2-15-04 lbs) for the heaviest fish prize. Dave Mitchell was 2nd with 3 dogs, a Pollack and a rockling for 2.88, just ahead of Norman Dorling on 2.82 with 3 dogs, 3 corkwings, a ballan, and a tub gurnard. Terry Jones took 4th with 2.20, Gary Mcleod 5th with 2.12, Gary Bates 6th with 1.03, and Dave Lunt 7th with 0.66.

Mitch and Gary were the only team with both members fishing, and won with 70 points.

Match 6 - Bromborough - 28th June 2009

Once again a match on the Mersey failed to live up to expectations, 13 of us turned up for this one, with only 9 weighing in. Bags included a few eels, a few flounders and just a couple of in size whiting amongst all the little ones.

Dave Mitchell found the top bag, at range from the left hand end of the venue, 3 flounders, 2 eels, and a whiting for 1.62 kgs. John Jones went to the right and found 3 flounders, an eel and a whiting for 1.19, Nigel Conlon took 3rd place with 2 eels for 0.93, including the heaviest fish of the match an eel of 0.60, ( 1-05-04 lbs. )

Mike Peters was 4th with 4 smaller eels for 0.77, Sue Price 5th, and top lady with an eel of 0.47, Kev Jones took 6th with 0.31, and Thomas Jones took the junior prize. Top team with 64 points were Mitch and Gary.

Match 5 - Holy Island Rover - 14th June 2009

A good turnout for an away match, with 17 members making the trip. Some stayed on the breakwater, with varying degrees of success, you need to know where and when to move around on there to find the different species.

Others went off to their own choice of rock marks, some of which could do with a sherpa guide. By the end of the evening it turned out that 16 brought fish to the scales,

John Jones had the lion`s share, staying on the breakwater and finding his 3 fish limit of ballan wrasse and dogs, plus a pollack and a poor cod for a weight of  5.45 kgs. One of his wrasse took the heaviest fish prize, at 1.54 kgs ( 3-06-00 lbs. )

2nd place went to Alun Blythin, fishing at Rhoscolyn, with 3 wrasse, 2 dogs and 2 pollack for 5.06 , 3rd was John Smith with 3 wrasse, 3 dogs and a Pollack for 4.76,

4th went to Dave Mitchell with 4.44, 5th Terry Jones with 3.95, and 6th Kev Jones with 3.72. Janet Dorling took the ladies prize, and top team were Terry and Kev with 69 points, those extra mini species can make a difference!

Match 4 - Dee Estuary Rover - 23rd May 2009

Just 14 of us this time , we never take into account that  bank holiday weekends can be an awkward time for a match for some. However the weather took a turn for the better this time, although it got a bit cool and windy towards the end.

10 of us chose Talacre, with 4 going to Mostyn. 11 weighed in, in all, with varying degrees of success.

The top weights all came from Talacre, it`s worth noticing that the top four bags went to the 4 anglers fishing furthest to the right, upstream of the green buoy.

Top bag on the day, with 25 dabs and a flounder for 4.49 kgs, went to Terry Jones, fishing on his 60th birthday, just because you`re old doesn`t mean you can`t be lucky!

League leader Dave Mitchell took 2nd with 25 dabs and 5 whiting for 4.04, his dabs must have been a bit smaller, 3rd was John Jones with 18 dabs and 1 whiting for 3.24, and 4th prize went to Gary Bates with 15 dabs and 2 flounders for 3.11. Mike Jones was 5th with 2.87 and Gary McLeod 6th with 1.96.

Mike`s bag included a flounder of  0.79 ( 1-11-12 lbs) a rare fish for Talacre, but not big enough for the heaviest fish prize, which went to Mark Hill with a very nice plaice of 0.87 ( 1-15-00 lbs) Mark had the only 2 plaice weighed in, caught at Mostyn, there was also a dogfish caught there by Mal Edwards, not the sort of fish you expect there!

Match 3 - North Shore - 9th May 2009

17 members turned out for this one, after a wet and windy afternoon the weather turned in our favour, dry and calm with a nice sunset, it almost felt like summer, just not warm enough.

There were plenty of whiting around, but most were undersize, with a few dogfish showing up later as it got dark.

Gary McLeod found 8 dogs and 3 whiting from in front of the paddling pool, to walk away with 1st place with a weight of 7.31 kgs. John Jones took 2nd with 6 dogs and a rockling for 4.25 kgs from behind the houses. 3rd went to Chris Jackson with 5 dogs and 4 whiting for 3.48, and 4th to Steve Parry with 4 dogs and 2 whiting for 3.42. Mike Peters was 5th with 2.80, including the heaviest fish of the match, a dog of 1.11 kgs, and 6th place was taken by Dave Mitchell with 2.60.

Stephen Higginson won the junior prize with 1.02 kgs and Sue Price the ladies prize.
Top team were Gary McLeod and Mike Jones with 68 points.

Match 2 - Flint Cob - 3rd May 2009

Only 16 of us this time, a bank holiday weekend and a lack of peeler crab for some meant giving it a miss. Norman missed his first match in living memory, owing to recovering at home after an operation on Tuesday, best wishes for a speedy return to the beach from us all Norm!

As it happened the eels were there in force, with immediate bites on the first cast for most of us, and everyone weighed in.

Mike Jones took the honours with 17 eels and a flounder for 5.34 kgs. His flounder also took the heaviest fish prize, at 0.60 kgs. 2nd was Dave Mitchell with 24 smaller eels and a flounder for 4.96. 3rd Gary McLeod with12 eels and 4 flounders for 3.97, 4th was Mark Hill with 13 eels and 2 flounders for 3.62, 5th Alun Blythin with 14 eels for 3.25, and 6th Terry Jones with 12 eels and a flounder for 2.83.

Sue Price took the ladies prize with 0.59, and Thomas Jones the junior prize with 0.39. Top team were Mike and Gary with 72 points for 1st and 3rd places.

Match 1 - Conwy Estuary Rover - 25th April 2009

A disappointing turnout of 21 club members fished the first leg of our summer league in the Conwy estuary earlier today.

The match was fished 3 down and 1 up, so the majority of people headed for the lagoon to target the Flounders. However those of us who have previously fished there with the juniors headed to Benarth, in the hope the Eels had arrived there.

A bag of 4 Flounders, including a fine fish over 2lb took top spot for Dave Mitchell.
Chris Jackson was second with 5 Flounders and 7 Eels, Kev Jones was third with a Flounder and 6 Eels.
Terry Jones took fourth with 2 Flounder and 3 Eels, and Thomas Jones showed its not just the juniors he can beat, by finishing fifth overall, and top junior on the day with a Flounder and 3 Eels.

With 2 junior matches scheduled at Benarth in the next few months, i cant wait to get back and get into those snotties again.

Winter Shore League 2009

Match 5 - Conwy Morfa - 3rd March 2009

This was always going to be a hard match, too early for flounders, and fishing in the daylight, so rockling would have to be the target again.

17 members turned out on a cold windy day with a chance of wintry showers, and it was pretty grim with no signs of a fish in the first hour or so. Things improved slightly after low water, with a few rockling coming in here and there, and by the end of the four hours 12 anglers had fish to weigh in.

Top bag, and the ladies prize, went to Sue Price with 5 rockling for 0.54 kgs. 2nd was Terry Jones with 3 for 0.32, including the heaviest fish a specimen of 0.21. 3rd place and the league championship went to Kev Jones with 0.29 kgs., and 4th to John Jones with 0.25. Dave Lunt was 5th with 0.24, and Alan Illman 6th with 0.22.

Top team on the day were Kev and Terry with 69 points, and with Gary Bates having to miss this match this was enough to take top place in the team competition.

The junior prize went to Stephen Higginson.

Lets hope the summer league matches don`t have to rely on the rockling to save the blanks!

Match 4 - Colwyn Bay - 28th February 2009

21 members this time on quite a pleasant evening, we weren`t sure what to expect as no-one seems to have been doing very well anywhere lately.

The match started quietly, with a couple of hours of the ebb left, the only fish around seemed to be the odd rockling. Kev was the one who started fishing alongside the rock groyne with small hooks, and it didn`t take long to realise that was the way to go!

By the end of the 4 hours the scores were Mitch 21 rockling, Kev 19, and Terry 17. These were the only species anybody had seen until the last cast was reeled in and John Jones, who had failed to join the rockling hunt, but stuck it out fishing at range was rewarded with the hardest earned dogfish on record!

Results were, 1st Dave Mitchell 1.82 kgs.  2nd Terry Jones 1.75.  3rd Kev Jones 1.53. 4th John Jones 1.03.  5th Chris Jackson 0.73.  6th Gary Bates 0.62.

The junior prize went to Stephen Higginson, in 8th place with 0.59, and the ladies prize to Sue Price with 0.07. Top team were Terry and Kev with 69 points, and the heaviest fish was John`s doggie of 0.73 kgs.

This leaves the top of the league very tight with one match left, it`s a case of having to weigh in at a very hard match to have a chance of taking the title.

Match 3 - Dee estuary rover - Sunday 8th February 2009

19 members turned out for this one, with 16 choosing the long walk out at Talacre and three heading for Mostyn. Unfortunately these were the only three to fail to weigh in.

The weather had a detrimental effect on catches, with a lot of cold fresh water coming down the river bringing weed and all sorts of rubbish with it! We had a nasty snow shower to contend with in the first hour, but the wind was not too bad, coming from the right, so not affecting us to a great extent.

Top bag on the Day went to Kev Jones with 11 dabs and a whiting in size for a weight of 2.18 kgs. 2nd was Steve Parry 8 dabs and a whiting for 1.70, 3rd Terry Jones 9 dabs and a whiting for 1.62, and 4th prize was split between Gary Bates and Shaun Rodenhurst, both with 1.46, Nigel Ford took 6th with 1.20, Top junior was Stephen Higginson with 0.87, Top lady was Sue Price with 0.20, and top team were Kev and Terry with 72 points. The heaviest fish prize went to Dave Mitchell with a whiting of 0.34 kgs.

Match 2 - Prestatyn - Sunday 25th January 2009

21 members arrived to fish this one, with a light offshore breeze and some warm sunshine, it was almost like Spring, however as soon as it went dark the wind found it`s teeth and reminded us how cold it can get!

Dabs and Rockling started to appear on the first few casts, but as the tide dropped so did the catch rate. The only other species caught were a couple of flounders and 1 codling.

Match winner was Terry Jones with a codling of 1.79 kgs. ( 3-15-00 lbs ) plus a dab and a rockling for 1.99 kgs. 2nd was Dave Mitchell with 7 dabs for 1.29, joint 3rd Gwyn Andrews with 4 dabs and a rockling, and Steve Parry with 5 dabs for 0.99 each. Shaun Rodenhurst took 5th with 4 dabs and 3 rockling for 0.98 and Dave Lunt 6th with a flounder and a dab for 0.76.

Sue Price took the ladies prize with 2 rockling for 0.17, and Stephen Higginson the junior prize with one for 0.07. Top team were Terry and Kev with 66 points and that codling was obviously the heaviest fish.

Match 1 - Pensarn - Saturday 10th January 2009

We had a good turnout of 30 anglers for the first match of 2009, including a lady and a junior.

The weather has been calm and frosty for 3 weeks now, but as soon as we get our rods out there are 30 - 40 mph Westerlies, which made things pretty uncomfortable!

We fished from 19-00 until 23-00, with high water at around 22-30, so hopes of Whiting and Dabs were high.

As the match progressed, the phone calls along the match length became more frequent with reports of some small Dabs and Rockling for a select few, but not a single Whiting was reported by anyone, even under size!

Several anglers gave up before the end, and many more couldn’t bear to attend the weigh in to see how badly they had done!

The match was won by Shaun Rodenhurst with a Dab of .33kgs. Gwinny Andrews took second with a Dab and a Rockling for .22kgs.
Sue Price was third and top lady with her 2 Rockling weighing .17kgs.

Sues husband Pete was in joint fourth place with a Rockling weighing .14kgs,
which was the same weigh as Kev Joneses Dab, which only just made the 23 cm size limit!
Dave Mitchell was fifth with 2 slugs for .13kgs.Gary Bates 6th with one slug weighing .10kgs, and Alan Illman was 7th with a little one of .06kgs.
The rest blanked, only 8 of the 30 anglers managed to catch fish big enough to bring to the scales!

Sue and Pete Price were top team with their third and fourth places.

Our next match is at Prestatyn on Sunday 25th January. Fishing from 15-00 until 19-00 and booking in at the sailing club carpark before 14-30. You will need to bring extra money for the carparks, as the pay and display machines are in operation all year round! You have been warned!

Summer Shore League 2008

Closed Fur and Feather - Colwyn Bay - Saturday 13th December 2008

25 members fished, with a light offshore breeze and a calm sea to wade into, it wasn`t too unpleasant at all ! The usual suspects were there in force, 26 cm. whiting in twos and threes, I`m sure if we raised the limit to 30 we`d catch them at 29 all night! Anyway all 25 weighed in, with the better bags coming from the Tan-lan headland area.

Dan Davies won with a bag of 20 Whiting for 4.75 Kgs. Gwinny Andrews came second with 13 Whiting and 2 Dabs for 3.10 Kgs and Dave Mitchell was third with 17 Whiting for 3.07 Kgs.

Heaviest round fish was a Whiting weighing 0.42kgs, caught by Adam Davies.
Heaviest flat fish was shared between Chris Gibbons and John Jones, who both had dabs of  0.34 kgs.

Thanks to everyone who supported the match and raffle.

Match 10 - Pensarn - Sunday 23rd November 2008

A dozen bravehearts turned up at Pensarn to fish in atrocious conditions, but the weather was so bad it proved impossible to hold the match.

After a discussion about alternative venues, we decided that in these weather conditions it would be more or less the same anywhere else, and we decided to cancel the match and count the best results from 8 of the 9 matches already held to decide the league championship.

Norman Dorling had a significant lead, and won by 7 points from Gary McLeod, with Dave Mitchell in 3rd.

Janet Dorling took the ladies` championship, and Thomas Jones, as the only junior to have fished a match, won the junior title.

The team champions were Norman Dorling and Gary McLeod, with Norman winning the K.O. cup, and Gary the Trevor Davies cup.

The heaviest weight trophy was won by Dave Mitchell.

Match 9 - Llandudno North Shore - Saturday 1st November 2008

A good turnout of 18 for this one, on a bitterly cold night with an onshore wind and a couple of hundred yards of white surf to cast into, it looked grim to say the least!

The first couple of hours were hard work with just the odd fish showing, but the whiting came on as the water got deeper, although they were mostly undersize, or only just in.

Billy McLintock gave us a masterclass, with a bag of 15 whiting, 2 dogs and a dab for 4.45 kgs. Terry Jones managed to find a decent codling and 9 whiting for 2.70 in 2nd and Gary McLeod had 12 whiting for 2.09 in 3rd. Norman Dorling took 4th with 7 whiting and a flounder for 1.56, to hold on to his lead in the league, with one match left.  Fifth place went to Dave Mitchell with 4 whiting, a dog and a rockling for 1.50, and 6th was Mike Peters with10 whiting for 1.48.

Sue Price took the ladies prize with 2 rockling for 0.22 and top team were Norman Dorling and Gary McLeod with 68 points. The heaviest fish was Terrys codling of 1.45 ( 3-03-08 lbs.)

Match 8 - Penmaenmawr -
Saturday 19th October 2008

15 members this time, including a few new faces, welcome all of you, I was otherwise engaged for this one, so Norman stepped in and got lumbered with the biggest weigh-in of the year so far!

All 15 weighed in, with Dave Mitchell taking the lion`s share, 19 Dogs, a Thornback and a Whiting for 21.91 kgs. Bill McLintock made his first appearance of this league to take 2nd with 14 Dogs and a Whiting for 14.53 kgs., and Gary Bates took 3rd with 14 Dogs for 11.79. 4th place was shared by Barry Haigh, with 8 Dogs and 2 Flounders for 9.52, and Gary McLeod with 9 Dogs and a Whiting for the same weight.

League leader Norman Dorling held on to top spot with his 6th place bag of     9 Dogs and a Whiting for 9.10. Sue Price took the ladies prize with a Dog of 0.92, and was unlucky with a 44 cm Bass, just 1 cm undersize!

Top team were Mitch and Gary with 72 points, and the heaviest fish was Mitch`s Thornback of 3.05 kgs.

Match 7 - Pwllheli - Saturday 20th September 2008

Just ten of us made the journey down the Lleyn for this one, but at least the weather was on our side, a flat calm sea as warm as an indoor swimming pool and a lovely sunset as we started to fish.

It started slowly for most of us apart from Sam , who found a dog first cast, and Kev who got a couple of dragonets amongst the undersized dabs. The dogs came on later, but the bites were a bit shy, with a lot not finding the hooks.

Gary McLeod ( Sam) took the match with 7 dogs for 3.51 kgs., Mike Peters was 2nd with 4 dogs for 2.60, Kev 3rd with 4 dogs and 2 dragonets for 2.20, and Terry Jones 4th with 4 dogs for 2.15. John Jones had 3 for 1.59 in 5th and Dave Lunt 2 for 1.16 in 6th.

Gary Bates took the heaviest fish prize with a dog of 0.79 kgs., and Janet Dorling the ladies prize, top team were Kev and Terry with 68 points.

Match 6 - Club waters rover - Saturday 16th August 2008

Just 13 of us this time, with a forecast of prolonged periods of heavy rain, I`m not surprised some felt the call of the armchair and Match Of The Day!

We all had different ideas about where to fish, some choosing to target eels and flounders in the Conwy, while some opted for the rough ground areas for dogfish.

At the end it turned out that the doggies came on in the last hour and a half, and the top 4 bags went to them.

Top weight was Terry Jones with 7 dogs and a whiting from North Shore for a weight of 6.16 kgs, this included the heaviest fish of the match, a dog of 1.29 kgs, ( 2-13-08 lbs). Second was John Smith with 4 dogs from the Great Orme for 3.85, 3rd was Mike Peters with 3 from Tan-Lan for 3.43, and 4th Mark Hill with 2 from the Orme for 1.74.

Norman Dorling took 5th place with 11 eels and a rockling from the Conwy estuary for 1.64, and 6th was John Jones with 2 dogs and a whiting from North Shore for 1.51.

Janet took the ladies prize with 4 eels for 0.52, and top team were John Smith and Mark Hill with 68 points.

Match 5 - Porth Iago - Sunday 13th July 2008

10 of us this time, on a brilliantly sunny day with no wind, we couldn`t have ordered it better, however I think we`ll have to have a rethink on these away matches for next year, with fuel prices the way they are.

Everyone weighed in, but some struggled to find their dogs and wrasse so that made it quite interesting when weigh in time arrived.

Mike Jones found a good spot, with his 3 fish bag limit on 4 species - ballans, dogs, pollack, and corkwings, giving him a runaway winning bag of 6.09 kgs. Nearest to him, but well behind was Terry Jones, with 3 ballans, a dog, and a small conger for 3.55 kgs.

Norman Dorling took 3rd with 3.39 to stay top of the league and also winning the final of the K.O. cup. 4th place went to Dave Mitchell with 2.90, 5th was Mike Peters with 2.66, and 6th Gary McLeod with 2.53. This was just sufficient to win him the Trevor Davies cup with 71 points to Norman`s 70 over the last 2 matches.

The heaviest fish prize went to Mike Jones with a ballan wrasse of 1.24 kgs ( 2-11-08 lbs ) and top team were Norman and Gary with 69 points.

Match 4 - Llam Carw, Amlwch - Sunday 29th June 2008

A very poor turnout this time, with just 9 of us making the trip. The weather started with showers, but the wind was behind us, and after the fist hour or so it turned into a pretty decent afternoon.

The dogfish were easy enough to find, with most of us getting our limit of three quite quickly, it was the other species that some were struggling to find.

Gary McLeod found his 3 wrasse after a move, and with 3 dogs and a Pollack he won with 5.04 kgs. Gary Bates had 3 dogs and 3 wrasse for 4.69 in 2nd place, and Kev Jones took 3rd with 3 dogs and 2 wrasse for 3.43. Norman Dorling was 4th with 2  wrasse and a dog for 2.42, Mitch 5th with 2.14, and Adam Davies 6th with 1.95.

Top team were Gary McLeod and Norman with 72 points and Dave Lunt had the heaviest fish, a wrasse of 1.32 kgs. ( 2-14-00 lbs. ) No ladies or juniors fished this one.

Match 3 - Holy Island rover - Saturday 7th June 2008

A splendid turnout for the first away match saw 18 members turn up on a glorious sunny day, but our plans for signing on at the car park may need a rethink next time, as it was full and we all ended up double parking by the slipway and getting moved on by the police, oops!

We all had our ideas where to fish, but as usual some went badly wrong in the weather conditions, it was just too nice a day, and a limit of 3 of each species meant the wrasse were going to make a big difference for those who found them.

Norman Dorling carried on his run of good form with a winning bag of 3 wrasse, 3 dogs and a whiting for 4.99 kgs., after a move to the breakwater for the dogs. Dave Mitchell went mountaineering near South Stack, and found 3 wrasse, 3 pollack, 3 pouting, a dog and a poor cod for 4.72, and 2nd place. Gary McLeod took 3rd place with 3 dogs and 2 wrasse for 3.75, and the last of the money went to Adam Davies in 4th with 3 dogs, 3 wrasse, and 3 tompots for 3.72.

Dan Davies and John Major tied for 5th place on 3.25 kgs. John`s bag included 2 spotted rays from “lilypond rock” the best of which took the heaviest fish prize at 3-07-08 lbs. just two and a half ounces short of the club record!

Janet Dorling won the ladies prize with 2.32 kgs.Top team were Norman and Sam again with 73 points, and no juniors fished.

Match 2 - Greenfield - Sunday 11th May 2008

Just 18 members turned up this time, in blistering sunshine and light winds it really felt like summer at last. It wasn`t to last though, we had a thunderstorm and rain for the last half hour of the match, catching a few people out who weren`t dressed for it!

The fishing wasn`t up to expectations, with just a few managing to find more than one fish. Eels and flounders mostly with just the odd plaice, and half a dozen whiting.

Norman Dorling took the honours with a 4 species bag from the ship end of the venue, 2 flounders, 2 eels, a rockling, and the only 6 in-size whiting of the match, for a winning bag of 2.64 kgs. Chris Gibbons fished the dock end for his 6 eels and 2 flounders for 2.58 kgs. Mike Jones had a plaice and a couple of eels for 1.16 in 3rd, his plaice taking the heaviest fish prize at 0.82 kgs. (1-12-12 lbs. ) and the last of the cash went to Gary McLeod ( Sam ), with 4 eels for 1.02 in 4th.

Top team were Norman and Sam with 72 points, and Janet took the ladies prize. No juniors fished.

Match 1 - Deganwy - Saturday 12th April 2008

24 members turned up for the opening match of the league, the calendar said summertime had started, our match diary said it was summer, but the weather obviously hadn`t been told! A cold wind coming across the estuary brought a procession of heavy showers straight in our faces to make for a very uncomfortable four hours.

The usual bags of flounders were the target, but some of us were less successful than in previous years, with 3 of the top 6 from last year`s match here blanking this time. Norman and Janet Dorling opted for the signal box area, and came back with a dozen between them, while the rest of us spread out around the downstream end of the narrows and beyond.

Janet had the top bag of 7 flounders for 2.45 kgs., with Mike Jones in 2nd place with 5 for 2.19 kgs. Norman also had 5 for 1.99 kgs., and John Smith took 4th with 4 for 1.25 kgs. Wayne McGilloway was 5th with 1.10, and Mark Hill 6th with 0.75.

Two teams tied on 64 points, Mark Hill and John Smith were one, and Norman Dorling and Gary McLeod the other. Janet took the ladies prize, and Thomas Jones the juniors. The heaviest fish was one of Mike Jones`s flounders at 0.58 kgs.

Winter Shore League 2008

Match 5 - Club Waters Rover - 22nd March

A spell of horrendous Easter weather reduced the turnout to just 11 anglers for this one, with 2 of the pre-booked members deciding not to bother. 10 of us opted to face the strong North-westerly at Talacre, where we were pretty sure to catch something at least, this worked with everyone weighing in. The only one with another plan was Norman Dorling, who chose Deganwy, this paid off handsomely, with his bag of 15 flounders for 6.91 kgs., more than treble the weight of the next best effort. His best flounder of 0.69 ( 1-08-04 lbs.) also taking the heaviest fish prize.

Bill McLintock took 2nd with 13 dabs for 2.06, and I managed 3rd with 10 dabs and a whiting for 1.74., 4th place went to Gary Bates with 8 dabs and a whiting for 1.64. Chris Gibbons was 5th with 1.08, and Dave Mitchell 6th with 0.93. Two teams scored 65 points, Dave Mitchell and Gary Bates, and Kev and myself.

The league title went to Norman Dorling, his masterstroke today taking him level on points with Dan but winning on total weight by a wide margin, Kev took 3rd place just 3 points behind. The team title went to Dan Davies and Chris Gibbons, 11 points clear of Kev and Terry.

Thanks to everyone who turned up to the 5 matches, and I hope we can keep up the support for the forthcoming summer league.

Match 4 - Perch Rock - New Brighton - Saturday 23rd February 2008

Another attempt at a match in the Mersey saw twenty members and one guest lining up at the start. The weather forecast was for South Westerly 15 m.p.h. winds, they lied! We had a westerly near gale behind us, and Sahara type sandstorms making things slightly less than comfortable.

The match started very slowly, with rumours of the odd fish or two, but few and far between, a few dabs and rockling on the ebb with the occasional under size whiting. As the tide turned there were a few more fish about, but still very disappointing , I for one was glad to see nine o`clock come to put an end to it, and I don`t think I was alone!

Chris Gibbons took the honours with 3 dabs, a whiting and a rockling for   0.73 kgs. Norman Dorling was 2nd with 3 dabs and a rockling for 0.68, Gary Bates 3rd with 3 dabs and 2 rockling for 0.65 , and Dan Davies 4th with 3 dabs for 0.57. This was enough to give Dan the lead in the league going into the last match.

Bill McLintock took 5th with 0.54, and Wayne McGilloway 6th with 0.36, 16 anglers weighed in, in all. The heaviest fish was one of Norman`s dabs at 0.25 kgs and top team were Chris and Dan with 71 points from 1st and 4th places.

Match 3 – Penmaenmawr  -  Saturday 9th February 2008

This time we got the weather right, with a spring-like day turning into a cold calm evening with a bit of frost, 26 turned up to give it a go. However the fishing let us down badly, with a flooding tide pushing us back up the beach at a gallop, there were people with 250 yards of line out and no sign of a bite.

A few whiting came on before the end of the match, but the in-size ones were very few and far between. Three anglers found a dog each, taking the fist 3 places as follows. 1st John Jones with one of 0.83 kgs also taking the heaviest fish prize. 2nd was Karl Rowan with one of 0.81, and 3rd Mark Hill 0.79. Dave Lunt took 4th with a flounder of 0.61, Wayne McGilloway 5th with 0.41 ( the only one to find 2 in-size whiting ) and Kev Jones 6th with 3 rockling for 0.38.

Top team were Karl Rowan and Bill Mclintock with 64 points.

Match  2 - Flint Cob -  Sunday 27th January 2008

23 anglers for this one, after some grotty weather for a couple of weeks we were fortunate to find a day with some sunshine and hardly any wind.
The fishing was a bit patchy for the first couple of hours with just a flounder or two coming in all along the match length. This soon changed as the tide got half way in, it was like turning a switch on, the whiting started all the way along. Some were undersize, but there were some around 35-38 cms as well, better fish than we`ve been getting off the open beaches this year.

Norman Dorling came out on top with 11 whiting and 2 flounders for 2.88 kgs. Gary Jones was 2nd with 5 whiting and 2 flounders for 2.27, Glyn Williamson 3rd with 10 whiting and a flounder for 2.17, and John Jones 4th with 7 whiting and a flounder for 1.97.

Just missing out on the money were Dan Davies in 5th with 1.93, and Kev Jones, 6th with 1.74. John Davies took the heaviest fish prize with a specimen flounder of 0.85  (1-13-12 lbs. ) and top team were Norman and John with 71 points from 1st and 4th places.
